Getting Vegucated: An interview with Ellen Orchid Mausner | This ...

The film "Vegucated" is about educating "regular" people who want to go vegan. The filmmaker, Marisa Wolfson, had the idea to do "Supersize Me" in reverse. ?The path to becoming vegan is multi-layered, involving learning about new foods, what foods are already vegan (hello, Oreos!), dealing with withdrawal from cheese and other food addictions, and learning about the plight of the animals and the planet.

Ellen Orchid Mausner?was one of the people Marisa found to vegucate. ?A single mom, psychiatrist, and?comedienne, we get to watch her experience on film. ?She is open, honest, funny, and still vegan! ?I got to ask Ellen about being "Vegucated."

Lisa Dawn Angerame: Why did you decided to get Vegucated?

Ellen Orchid Mausner: I wanted to learn about the benefits of a vegan diet and other issues regarding animal cruelty and saving the environment, especially from the waste/pollution aspect associated with current factory farming practices.

LDA: What was easy??

EOM: Tasting all the new foods! ?Learning about seitan, tofu, and quinoa. New flavors, new recipes, new ideas.

LDA: What was difficult??
EOM: Giving up dairy, especially milk, eggs, and cheese. Occasionally I would get cravings for these things, but I found that the substitutes were quite enjoyable, e.g. soy milk, almond milk, soy cheese. ?I used to eat a lot of salmon and tuna and it was hard giving those up. I used to like milk in my coffee and sometimes there was no soy or almond milk available, e.g. on airplanes and most restaurants, so that was also hard. I made myself drink it black at those times!

LDA: Are you still vegan?

EOM: Yes, I am still vegan. ?I feel so much better about having a healthier diet, losing weight and also boycotting those industries where animal cruelty occurs, with extreme exploitation of cows, pigs, chickens, fish. As time goes by, I keep learning how to eat better, trying more new things, even new greens! ?I have seen for myself that I can live exclusively on a plant-based diet and absolutely don't need - or want- to eat any dead animal flesh. ?

Not so happy: King penguins stressed by human presence

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

King penguins tolerate some, but not all, human interference. Research published in BioMed Central's open access journal, BMC Ecology, investigates the adjustment of a king penguin colony on the protected Possession island in the subantarctic Crozet Archipelago to over 50 years of constant human disturbance.

A team of researchers from the University of Strasbourg, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the University of Lausanne, compared 15 king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) breeding in areas disturbed daily by humans and 18 penguins breeding in undisturbed areas. All penguins selected were brooding a chick aged from 2 days to 1 month.

Using heart rate to indicate the stress level of each penguin, they compared the stress response of penguins from the different areas to three stressors. Two low intensity stressors, a human approach to 10 meters and a loud noise, mimicked the actions of tourists, researchers, and noises from machines when operating on the outskirts of the colony. One high intensity stressor, a capture, simulated researchers taking measurements.

Compared with penguins from undisturbed areas, penguins from areas of high human disturbance were less stressed by noise and approaching humans, but following capture, their maximum relative heart rate increased 42% although they then recovered faster.

"Our findings report a case of physiological adjustment to human presence in a long-studied king penguin colony, and emphasize the importance of considering potential effects of human presence in ecological studies", said lead author Vincent Viblanc.

Penguins 'getting used to' people may be beneficial to scientific research and tourist management. However, this study also raises the question of the potential influence of human activities on the selection of specific phenotypes. For example the progressive desertion of disturbed areas by more stress-sensitive individuals. For scientists studying animals in their native habitat, it also underlines the importance of physiological studies in interpreting results before conservation measures are implemented.

Evaluating the impact of humans on protected wildlife such as the king penguins is particularly important given the rise in popularity of Antarctic tour groups. Dr Viblanc said, "A central question for ecologists is the extent to which anthropogenic disturbances (e.g. tourism) might impact wildlife and affect the systems under study". He continued "One of the major pitfalls of such research is in forgetting that, from the perspective of the wildlife studied, tourism and scientific research are not two worlds apart."

What compels people to give their money away?

Meet Pamala Wiepking, who studies what makes philanthropists tick, and tells us why women, the elderly and the poor are more generous

What makes us give money to charity?
Most giving is done through some sort of social interaction. Eighty-five per cent of donations are made in response to a direct request - through a friend, on the doorstep, through a media appeal. People feel obligated because of their reputations - they want to establish them or don't want to damage them. In general the people who are most generous are the ones who are asked to give most often.

Who gives the most?
Religious people tend to be the most giving across the board. There is a lot of research on that, and it applies across cultures. This is partly because of the values they have grown up with, but also their religious attendance. If you're getting together with other people who are giving, who can see whether or not you are giving, then to some extent you have to live up to those expectations if you want to be involved in this social group.

You have investigated whether we get more miserly as we grow old. What did you find?
The older you get, the more likely you are to give more, but this evens out and eventually declines in people over 75. The economist Russell James and I did a study to find out why this is. We thought it might be related to a decline in cognitive ability, but we didn't find that. Instead we found that older people stop giving because they are less often in situations where they encounter requests for donations. They are physically less capable of going to services or gatherings.

Does gender make a difference?
Women tend to be more generous. That is partly because they are more empathic, care more about others and about inequality. Men donate more to political parties, and they are more likely to be generous if they are well educated and well off.

But rich people aren't always the most philanthropically minded...
Poorer people give away a higher proportion of their income than richer people. I think there is a logical explanation for this. Most people give similar amounts in similar situations. If you're asked in a door-to-door collection you might give ?2, if you're asked by direct mail perhaps ?10, and that is equal across all incomes. It is not because rich people are inherently less generous.

You've also looked at whether we lie about how much we donate. What did you find?
We compared donations as reported in a survey with donations as recorded in a charity's database. Interestingly, we found that most people do not lie about their giving. However, some people underestimate their donations, for example those with a Protestant religious affiliation (they do not want to make public that they gave; it is between them and God) and respondents in higher income households, who might have forgotten the relatively small donation.

How can people be persuaded to give more?
We need role models. In the Netherlands, philanthropists are not publicly applauded. In the US, anyone who gives even a little is celebrated.

Man 'dates' virtual pop star using VR goggles

22 hrs.

In a slightly creepy but undoubtedly impressive feat of DIY electronics, an evidently lonely Japanese hacker has put together a virtual girlfriend through a combination of motion-tracking hardware, video goggles, and some scavenged 3-D game assets.

A video on YouTube, originally posted at Hack a Day, shows the view through a pair of video goggles that have been augmented with an Asus Xtion motion-tracking tool, essentially an off-brand Microsoft Kinect. This helps track his motion and the environment, and is assisted by some augmented-reality software that places virtual items on the image.

The last ingredient is, of course, a popular Japanese virtual pop idol. Hatsune Miku has starred in many games and concerts, and clearly the builder, known at the moment?only by his online handle "Alsionesvx," is a fan. He collected some 3-D models and animations from a portable game that has some augmented reality functions and merged them with his hacked-together environment.

Now Hatsune Miku not only appears before him at the park and in his apartment, but follows him when beckoned, is blocked properly by things like trees, and even casts a shadow. He interacts with her, as well, flipping her tie and patting her head. It's troubling to watch him pet her fondly and then bop her on the head ? not to mention?the end of the video, which is a nod to potential applications best left to the imagination for now.

This application of cutting-edge technologies may seem rather frivolous, but it's easy to imagine practical uses. ?Virtual tours and classes, games, telepresence and, yes, companionship ? there are many possibilities, but it'll be a while before this patchwork of free software and taped-together hardware will be practical for everyday use.
