By msnbc.com staff

You sure you wanted winter? The Midwest will get several inches of snow overnight and into Thursday while the Northeast faces sleet, freezing rain and a bit of snow -- making for ugly commutes in the morning.

On Wednesday night, "sleet and freezing rain will move into parts of Central New York, the Capital District, the Catskills, Hudson Valley and Connecticut River Valley," weather.com reported. "Meanwhile, where the cold air is deeply entrenched, look for all snow to fall over northern Upstate New York and northern New England."

By Thursday, that system is expected to leave up to?6-10 inches of snow in New England.

The Midwest, for its part, will?finally get a?decent snow cover. Chicago can expect 5-8 inches, weather.com reported, while most of Wisconsin should? also see 5-8 inches.?

Even with this week's snow, it's been a mild winter so far. Just 16 percent of the continental U.S. had snow on the ground as of Tuesday -- compared to nearly 62 percent at the same time last year.
