A Handful of Sports | Happy 75th, PIAA Wrestling Championships

By Daniel Paulling

The PIAA Wrestling Championships are celebrating their 75th birthday on March 18, 1938. Even though we?re a few days early, let?s take a look through some notes.

  • The first championship happened at Recreation Building at Penn State Campus 75 years ago. A first-class postage stamp cost $0.03 then and $0.45 now. Don?t ask about gas prices.
  • There were 78 wrestlers from 27 schools in the first tournament. There are 132 Class AA schools alone and 448 wrestlers in both classes.
  • Clearfield?s Sam Harry was the first state champion ? at the 85-pound weight bracket. There were only 10 weight classes then and 14 now, none anywhere close to 85 pounds.
  • The rules then were slightly different. Each period lasted seven minutes, the wrestlers didn?t wear headgear, and there was no scoring system. The match was determined by either a pin or by most riding time.
  • The tournament moved to Hershey?s Hersheypark Arena in 1979 before moving to Giant Center in 2003, where it has been held since.
