PFT: Seahawks taking a look at Braylon Edwards

Braylon+Edwards+Seattle+Seahawks+v+San+Francisco+1ToK_F4yFmElGetty Images

It?s been a while since we?ve heard anything about veteran wide receiver Braylon Edwards, but he?s back on the radar as camps open around the NFL.

Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com reports that the Seahawks will have Edwards in for a workout. Edwards was released by the 49ers near the end of the 2011 season after he caught just 15 passes in nine games before being sidelined by a knee injury. There were rumors of interest from the Bengals and Jets over the course of the offseason, but they never amounted to much.

Edwards had a productive season as a deep threat for the Jets in 2010 and there will likely be some team that gives him a shot at recapturing that glory if he proves he?s healthy enough to get back on the field. That?s a big if, of course, but, as the Texans working out Roy Williams shows, teams are looking for help at wideout.

The Seahawks opened a spot in their receiving corps when they released Mike Williams and LaCanfora?s report indicates that the team is also looking at other free agent wideouts. That would suggest that they aren?t thrilled with the current group ? Sidney Rice, Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate, Deon Butler, Ricardo Lockette, Kris Durham and Ben Obomanu ? although Edwards will likely have to prove he can be a major part of the offense since he offers no special teams value.

Um, Kyren, quick question: How can Samil alternate between mortal and Fallen Angel when he gave up those powers as a sacrifice to ressurect Lanuya? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the sacrifice, since you cannot get the gift back?

Zach, to answer your question: Samil's powers were taken, making him a mortal for now. When we start the first plot he will be offered position as Angel of Death instead of being a demon he will be a fallen angel, working his way to being a true angel. Does that make sense?

Oh yeah, and do you guys want to hear the idea I had for the first plot? It will be focused more around Samil and David and less around Lanuya. The one afterwards will be a tad more focused around the new girl who you will be meeting. :)

(AP) ? American Airlines CEO Tom Horton wants to set the record straight: It was he who approached US Airways CEO Doug Parker about the possibility of combining the two airlines, not the other way around.

Horton has never made that fact public before, but he's doing so now to send a message. If American is going to combine with US Airways or any other airline, the decision will be Horton's.

Since American's parent AMR Corp. filed for bankruptcy last November, Parker has been aggressively promoting a combination of the two airlines as the only way to save American. Parker has championed the idea on Wall Street, in the media and lined up support from the three labor unions at American. Investors have treated the possibility as a near inevitability, pushing up shares of US Airways Group Inc. 150 percent over the past seven months.

But in an interview with The Associated Press Horton was emphatic that there's more financial pressure on US Airways than American to find a partner. And he cited Parker's repeated overtures as a sign of desperation.

Perhaps the biggest problem on the horizon for US Airways is that its labor costs are going to rise, Horton said. Unions there haven't had a new contract in more than seven years. Horton said Parker is in "a race against the clock" to somehow increase revenue before he has to pay higher salaries in a new contract. A combination with American would help do that because American flies many more international routes, which bring in higher fares per passenger.

"It would be tremendously unwise for us to pursue a combination with a company because they are seeking to solve their own problems," Horton said.

Elise Eberwein, US Airways executive vice president for communications, said in response: "Nothing could be further from the truth. We've got a very sustainable model."

On Wednesday, the Tempe, Ariz. airline reported that revenue rose 7.2 percent in the second quarter and it made $306 million in profit, its best quarter ever.

Horton and Parker started their airline careers together in the 1980s, sitting practically side-by-side in cubicles at American Airlines' headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. And they've remained friends.

The first conversation the two had about a possible merger took place in September, when Horton was still just American's president. Horton wouldn't say where they met but two people familiar with the situation said it was at the A Bar A Ranch, a 100,000-acre retreat in southern Wyoming during an exclusive gathering of top airline executives informally known as "conquistadores del cielo," or the conquerors of the skies. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the executive meeting is supposed to be a secret. The discussion between Horton and Parker occurred during a barbeque lunch along the banks of the North Platte River.

"I said to Doug, standing by the river, I think there could be the potential for value creation in a combination," Horton recalled. "I made that pitch. We nodded heads to one another."

Two months later, on Nov. 29, American's parent company, AMR Corp., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. On the same day, former CEO Gerard Arpey stepped down and American named Horton as its new CEO.

Within weeks, Parker started to publicly call for a merger. But Horton remained steadfast: his airline would emerge from bankruptcy independent.

Now Horton is stepping up his rhetoric. He is making his case about American's own strength with investors and Wall Street analysts, most recently at a breakfast and a lunch on Friday in New York.

Ray Neidl, a Maxim Group airline analyst who met with Horton at the breakfast, said he was swayed by Horton's determination to keep American independent. "I reduce (the) odds of a merger happening from 90 (percent) to less than 50," he said.

Another analyst, Helane Becker from Dahlman Rose, noted that "it's more important for US Airways to do the deal than it is for American."

US Airways stock hit a 52-week high on July 13 as merger speculation peaked. It has since fallen more than 20 percent as investors have questioned the certainty of a deal. The stock closed Wednesday at $11.15, down 3.75 percent.

There's an unspoken incentive for Horton to bash US Airways and quash merger speculation ? drive down his rival's stock price and make a merger less expensive.

One reason a combination may be less likely is that American has been getting stronger as part of its bankruptcy restructuring. Revenue is growing and costs are down. The airline is shedding money-losing routes and has ambitious orders for new planes with some of the most advanced interiors available.

Combining with another airline is not out of the question for American, Horton said during the interview, which took place after an industry conference in Boston. But he said the best time to merge is when you are at "a position of greatest strength." That could mean a combination during or after the bankruptcy process.

American has exclusive rights until the end of December to present its own plan for restructuring to the bankruptcy court. Ultimately, it will be the bankruptcy judge and the airline's creditors that decide its fate. American's three unions hold a third of the creditors' votes. Horton noted that the union leadership's feelings are "not reflective of how the 80,000 people of American feel. So stay tuned."

There would be some advantages to a merger for American. US Airways has a strong domestic presence that would feed well into American's European and Latin American routes. Combined, they would be nearly equal in size to rivals Delta Air Lines and United Continental Holdings Inc. That size would help to steal away large corporate contracts.

But Horton notes that US Airways is "not the only option." There has been talk about a merger with JetBlue Airways Corp. or Alaska Air Group, Inc., but the leaders of both airlines said publicly that they want to remain independent.

Venture Capital Is A Great Place For Women If They'd Give It A Chance

Kleiner Perkins Responds: ?Vigorously Denies? Discrimination Against Ellen Pao

Why Women Entrepreneurs Don?t Receive Funding

Grace Nasri

Written by Grace Nasri, managing editor at comparison engine FindTheBest. She works with the NYC chapter of Women 2.0,?a women?s tech and entrepreneurship group.

The facts:?Women make up just 6% of chief executives at the leading 100 tech companies. Women are launching companies at a rate 1.5 times higher than the national average, but they receive less than 10 percent of venture funding. Women make up only 9% of board members of Silicon Valley companies. At the leading 25 VC firms, only 8% of the investment professionals are women.

The opinions:?The rationalizations as to why this is the case range from placing the onus on women for not majoring in quantitative fields and lacking the necessary skills needed to lead or invest in successful companies, to blaming what some see as a male-dominated culture that promotes traditionally masculine-qualities at the expense of women. The reality likely falls somewhere in-between.

Despite the relative lack of women in the tech and venture capital world, there are many successful female partners thriving in this space today?many of whom say that despite the low numbers, the VC industry is a great place for women.

Deborah Farrington (StarVest Partners), Jenny Lee (GGV Capital) and Annie Lamont (Oak Investment Partners) have made Forbes? Midas List of the leading venture capitalists over the years. They shared their personal stories about how they got their start, what inspires them about the space and what advice they would give fellow women aspiring to enter venture investing.

The venture world embraces many backgrounds

A unique thing about the venture capital industry is that it welcomes a range of backgrounds. Of the women interviewed in this article, one has a background in business, one is an engineer and one is a political scientist.

?Women need to realize that there are many ways to get involved in venture capital,? Farrington, who received her BS in Economics at Smith College and went on to get her MBA at Harvard Business School, advised. ?My background in finance gave me the expertise to analyze business models. For e-commerce investing, women who have backgrounds in retail, fashion and media are well prepared because they understand the customers.?

The venture capital space is great for women

Venture capitalists tend to agree that since the industry is so performance-based and results-driven, it favors people solely on objective and quantifiable metrics?leaving little room for discrimination or favoritism.

Lee, who received her BS in Electrical Engineering at Cornell and her MBA from the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University, said that being a woman never hindered her; in fact, she says the advantage of working in such a metrics-driven sector means performance is judged on a very objective scale. ?I do not feel hindered [as a female VC]. The big advantage of being in the venture capital industry is that performance can be clearly measured by the work you have done, CEOs you have supported?and the returns you have delivered. Staying focused, finding good companies to invest in and?returning capital to our investors continue to be the number one objective and best measurement for?performance?in our industry,? Lee explained, adding that there are many great things women can bring to the table in the venture world.

?Women have a sixth sense that?can sometimes be useful when combined with analytical skills to assess startup team dynamics and personalities.? Women may also work better on male-dominated boards to help balance views and perspectives,? Lee said.

(AP) ? Shea Weber can thank the Philadelphia Flyers for one of the richest and longest contracts in the NHL.

But the Nashville Predators will pick up the tab.

The small-market Predators made the bold move Tuesday to match the staggering offer sheet made by a deep-pocketed Flyers organization to keep the two-time Norris Trophy-nominated defenseman in the franchise.

Shea it ain't so, Philly. Weber is still a Predator.

Nashville dug deep into the pocketbook and decided to pay Weber the $110 million over 14 years offered by the Flyers. Weber, 26, is the Predators' captain and played on a $7.5 million arbitrator's award last season. He had 19 goals and 49 points along the way.

Nashville already lost free-agent defenseman Ryan Suter to Minnesota this summer, and losing Weber would have been an unexpected blow to a defense-first team that had 104 points last season and has captured hearts around the region the past two years with postseason runs.

The Flyers, eliminated in the second round the past seasons after a run to the Stanley Cup finals in 2010, were looking for someone to fill the void left by defenseman Chris Pronger's absence. Instead, Philadelphia is left scrambling.

And Weber, for a week at least, hoped he would land in Philadelphia. Now, he will likely end his career in Nashville.

"In tendering an offer sheet to Shea Weber, we were trying to add a top defenseman entering the prime of his career," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "With Nashville matching our offer, we wish Shea and the Predators all the best."

On behalf of Predators chairman Tom Cigarran, GM David Poile and CEO Jeff Cogen, the team released a statement that called the Weber signing, "the most important hockey transaction in franchise history." Poile said from the start the Predators would match ? and they did, even at the steep price.

Weber is owned $27 million over the next year and $68 million in bonus money over the first six years of the deal under the current CBA.

"It was a flagship moment for the Predator organization," Weber agent Jarrett Bousquet said by phone.

Weber is a three-time All-Star who helped Canada win gold in the 2010 Olympics, and is also is the mainstay of the Predators' defensive-minded approach. He is coming off a season in which he turned in a career-best plus-21 rating. Weber was sixth among NHL defensemen in scoring, as well, last year. He also had a career-high 22 points on the power play, and led all NHL defensemen with 10 power-play goals.

Weber averaged 29 minutes, 9 seconds of ice time last season, second on the team to his former partner, Suter, who signed a 13-year, $98 million deal with Minnesota on July 4.

The Predators said they wanted to send a message to their fans that they remain committed to fielding a Stanley Cup contender. Consider it done.

"It was absolutely essential that they understand and believe that we are doing everything possible to ice a Stanley Cup competing team each and every season," the Predators said in a release.

It's easily the biggest contract in Nashville history.

"I think what Nashville showed today is they're willing to step up with some of the more solid ownership groups," Bousquet said. "They said, 'You know what? We are a destination for free agents. We're a place that guys are going to want to come and we're solid ownership. We're going to keep our stars.' When that happened, Shea was pretty excited they were willing to step up like that and give him that commitment."

The Predators said they had the money to keep Weber and Suter after signing goalie Pekka Rinne to a seven-year, $49 million deal last November. But Poile couldn't keep Suter in town despite team officials thinking they had a good chance to keep their top draft pick in 2003. The Wild not only snagged Suter, but also agreed with forward Zach Parise, Suter's good friend who left New Jersey for a similar deal to Suter's, a month after leading the Devils to the Stanley Cup finals.

This could be the last deal of its kind in the NHL. The owners reportedly want to limit contracts to five years in the latest round of negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement

"We wanted to take advantage of this CBA because we're not sure what the economic landscape will look like in the next CBA," Bousquet said. "With this, he got some security with him and his family. He's in a place that's familiar to him and ownership's proven that they're solid and ready to step up."

Nashville took Weber, the team's fourth pick in the second round in that same 2003 draft, to arbitration a year ago and couldn't take the restricted free agent there again this summer.

The Predators said the decision to match the offer came down to three factors.

? Was Weber the individual that this franchise wanted to lead our team, a team that would compete for the Stanley Cup every year, for the next 14 years?

? Would matching the offer sheet be in the best long-term interest of the team and organization?

? Would a decision not to match the offer sheet send a negative message to current Predators players and other NHL organizations, a message that the Predators would only go so far to protect its best players and be pushed around by teams with "deep pockets?"

"The answer to each of the above questions is clearly "yes,'" the team said.

The Flyers are left to figure out what's next.

Iraq to set up camps for Syrian refugees

Iraq will set up camps at two of its three border crossings with Syria to provide support for Syrian refugees fleeing the conflict in their homeland, a government spokesman said on Tuesday.

Iraq had initially said it would not accept Syrian refugees because it needed its police and army to maintain security within the country, but Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki changed Baghdad's policy on Monday.

"The council of ministers (cabinet) decided to build camps to house Syrian refugees," government spokesman Ali Dabbagh said in a statement.

The camps will be erected close to the frontier towns of Al-Qaim and Rabiyah, known in Syria as Albu Kamal and Yarabiyah, respectively.

Albu Kamal is currently under the control of Syrian rebels, but Yarabiyah and the third main border crossing, Tenef along the southern edge of the two countries' 600-kilometre (375-mile) frontier, are in the hands of the army.

Dabbagh said 50 billion dinars ($42 million) had been allocated to "provide relief and assistance" for Syrian refugees as well as Iraqis who were returning to their country to flee the violence in Syria.

Iraq's transport ministry has said more than 2,000 Iraqis have returned to the country by plane in recent days, as well as authorities having estimated "thousands" having crossed trough Tenef.

Life sentence in Jennifer Hudson family slayings

CHICAGO (AP) ? Struggling to contain his anger, a Chicago judge on Tuesday sentenced Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson's former brother-in-law to life in prison for killing her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew in what prosecutors say was a fit of jealous rage.

In blistering comments, Cook County Circuit Judge Charles Burns rejected William Balfour's claims that he was innocent of the crimes.

"You have the heart of an arctic night," Burns told Balfour. "Your soul is as barren as dark space."

Balfour was convicted in May of first-degree murder in the 2008 shooting deaths of Hudson's 57-year-old mother, Darnell Donerson; her 29-year-old brother, Jason Hudson; and her 7-year-old nephew, Julian King.

During the trial, prosecutors portrayed Balfour, who was married to Hudson's sister, Julia Hudson, as a jealous estranged husband who often stalked the Hudson family home after he moved out in early 2008. Balfour's attorneys suggested someone else committed a crime in the family's three-story house in the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago's South Side.

Burns' harshest comments Tuesday came in regards to Julian's death. The judge's voice cracked as he recounted how terrified the child must have been in the second before he was shot twice in the head.

"I have no doubt in my mind he looked to you when you put bullets in his head," the judge said.

Hudson, who attended every day of Balfour's trial earlier this year, sat next to her sister and dabbed her eyes with a tissue a couple of times during the hearing, including the 10 minutes in which Burns put his own anger into words. She did not make a statement to the judge and left the courtroom without commenting.

Balfour offered his condolences to the Hudson family while maintaining that he didn't kill their relatives.

"My deepest prayers goes out to Julian King. I loved him. I still love him," he said. "I'm innocent, your honor."

Burns, however, said he had no doubt "whatsoever" that Balfour committed the crimes, including the shooting of a little boy "just because he was there."

"I don't think you have one ounce of remorse in your soul; I really don't," Burns said.

Illinois does not have the death penalty, and Balfour faced a mandatory life sentence. The judge sentenced Balfour to three terms of life in prison plus 120 years on other charges, a largely symbolic move but one that underlined the judge's feelings.

The killings occurred the morning after Julia Hudson's birthday, and prosecutors said he became enraged when he stopped by the home and saw a gift of balloons in the house from her new boyfriend.

After his estranged wife left for work on the morning of Oct. 24, 2008, prosecutors said Balfour went back inside the home with a .45-caliber handgun and shot Hudson's mother. He then allegedly shot Hudson's brother twice in the head as he lay in bed.

Prosecutors said Balfour then drove off in Jason Hudson's SUV with Julian, Julia's son, and shot the boy several times in the head as he lay behind a front seat. His body was found in the abandoned vehicle miles away after a three-day search.

"Three days under a tarp," Burns said of the time the boy's body lay in the backseat of the SUV. "Just as if you threw out the trash and left it to rot."

Although the sentence means Balfour will likely die in prison, the judge made a point of telling Balfour the sentences would run one after another, followed by an additional 120 years for his other convictions, including home invasion, aggravated kidnapping and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The only family member to speak was Julian's father, Gregory King, who told of the three days of hoping that his son might be alive only to find out he was dead. He also spoke about what had been taken from him by his son's death, of the everyday moments that make up a relationship between a father and a son.

"I miss picking Julian up from the school bus," King said. "I miss going on field trips with him. ... I even miss his bugging me about Sponge Bob Square Pants, a cartoon character he was kind of afraid of."

Jennifer Hudson chose not to make a statement. During the trial, the Academy Award-winning actress for her role in the 2007 film "Dreamgirls" testified that she had known Balfour since the eighth grade and always disliked him.

Elder Care: Managing Holstility from Mom following a Transition

As individuals age, they will face a variety of transitions that may prove extremely difficult to endure. From moving in with family members to hiring a senior care provider to adapting to new medical needs, these transitions will most likely place a great deal of stress on your elderly loved one. It is important, then, that you are able to understand the reaction of your senior and manage any hostility that they may demonstrate.

Lucy has cared for her elderly mother, Martha, for several years. She recently made the decision to hire a senior care provider who is able to supply the constant care that Lucy cannot, due to her professional and familial obligations. Martha was not happy with this decision and felt as though Lucy was abandoning her. For this reason, Martha was hostile toward Lucy for several weeks after the senior care provider began work. Lucy and the home care professional talked about the issue and came up with the following ways to manage this hostility. They are sharing these tips to help others navigate this sensitive situation successfully.

  1. Discuss any major transitions with your elderly loved one ahead of time. Give them ample time to prepare for such changes and ask any questions they may have.
  2. If your loved one will be moving to a new place, take them to see their future home before their move in date if possible. Also ideal is allowing them to contribute to the decision making process; it may make the transition easier if they feel as though they have made the choice themselves.
  3. Communicate regularly with your elderly loved one. Talk about the transition, explain why it is necessary, and remind your senior that it is in their best interest. In Martha's case, she felt abandoned even though Lucy was doing what was best for her mother. Talking about this will help seniors and their loved ones manage hostility that may arise on both sides.
Making major transitions is not easy for anyone, but it can be particularly difficult for seniors who resist change or feel as though their families are giving up on them. Clear communication and patience are crucial when managing hostility.

Local manufacturers flay new policy of importing auto parts for ...

Lahore : ? Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM), flaying the abrupt changes in current policy regarding motorcycle industry, has said that the plan to allow a new investor to import all motorcycle parts at 5% duty (as against current rate of 15%) will not only be a negation of previous policies, but it will also encourage producers to bypass local vendors and manufacturers and decrease use of local components and lead to heavy losses in vendors? business.

The PAAPAM managing committee members, in a meeting, said that the sector had progressed tremendously due to consistent policy-making on part of the government, but the new policy has threatened the industry growth.

They said that following the Board of Investment?s initiatives to incentive a Japanese motorcycle manufacturer?s re-entry in the Pakistani market at 5% rates had shaken the confidence of investors and local manufacturers.

It is also worth mentioning that the so called ?new entrant? will recover its total investment in 4-5 years in the form of duty concessions alone at a heavy cost to the exchequer.

?Import of already localized parts at CKD rate of duty will cause a rollback of the deletion program already achieved after a lot of efforts. In fact several new local bike makers have also introduced a new 125CC motorcycles but no relaxation in localization was given to them. However, those parts, which are not being developed locally, could be imported but at higher rate of duty,? the vendors? association members observed collectively.

Addressing the meeting, PAAPAM chairman Syed Nabeel Hashmi, said that the policy U-turn is worrisome and against the interests of the country and future industrialization. He said that the portrayal of the motorcycle manufacturer as a new investor conveniently overlooks the fact that the same brand was produced and marketed for decades in Pakistan, and was only forced to wind up due to its failure to compete with other brands, especially those from China.

He said that the vendors are dismayed at the government?s insistence in granting special status to this OEM on its re-launch.

?Motorcycle production has increased from 100,000 units at the start of the century, to around 2 million this fiscal year,? he said adding that no other industrial sector has shown such high and sustained growth during the past decade. In fact, Pakistan has emerged as a global leader in the production of 70CC motorcycles, where no single vendor dominates the market for a single part, but multiple vendors for a single part are available. This indicates the depth of the vendor industry in motorcycle parts. He claimed that Pakistan now exports 125CC bikes as well.

PAAPAM vice chairman Munir K. Bana pointed out that government claimed the new investment would introduce new technology to the country was a mere eyewash, as existing players had introduced the latest Euro-2 engines in their products without any special incentives. ?Current players are even willing to import hybrid and EFI-based engines without special incentives?, he said. This is because many engine parts complying with new emission standards are produced locally, he added.

Elder Care? Elders.

Posted by viking12 on Jul 23, 2012 in Nursing Homes

T or not, there are more than seventeen thousand nursing houses in the US. Luckily, you are only going to perform a little research on the comparatively few that are found in a location that is handy for you. It could be that you find the very best retirement home in all ways in a community that's a hundred miles from where you reside. Elders that are not visited fairly frequently in their new environment will speedily suffer depression, thinking that nobody cares about them.

Do not feel tempted to sign with such a facility! Be ready to accept a facility that might be a nick or 2 down from your number one choice if it implies that it?s close by and handy for you and family members. The more is the dependency the more is the compromise with the adequate showering. Many a time it's the case that the individual isn't satisfied by his daily showering styles as he's more dependent on others for making him bath. Today with the enlarging use of these bathtubs there's regular amending in this new showering style. Nevertheless you won't do anyone good over the long term if you don't accept some assistance when you want it. Bather has many facilities today with walk in bathtubs to contend with general ones.

If you're feeling the strain, don't be frightened to look into sources of help. Services are out there, from counselling to home medicare execs to adult day cares. If you can release some of the responsibility, your relations with your charges will improve, and everyone will be more happy eventually. Folks are 7 times more certain to be hurt in a fall with a hiker verses a cane. Over 50% of fall wounds connected with hikers and canes occur at home. The issues of safety surrounding mobility aids have received little notice. This has helped to create an issue that's eventually getting some attention.

Women With Almost 17% Representation in Libya 200-Member ...

Thirty-three women have been elected to serve in Libya's General National Congress in the first free elections two weeks ago. The tally gives women 16.5 percent representation in the 200-member transitional authority.

In its analyses of the results announced earlier this week, womensnews quoted Samira Massoud, acting president of the Libyan Women's Union, a growing national organisation with membership in the thousands saying: "This is a very good starting point: 32 women elected with the parties and one independent," said

The tally gives women 16.5 percent representation in the 200-member transitional authority. In comparison, the United States, has a Congress comprised of 17 percent women.

Ms Massoud said that unlike sisters in neighbouring Tunisia and Egypt, women in Libya had almost no political history under Gaddafi or much experience in civil society activism.

In a surprise, Libya's landmark vote gave an edge to a liberal coalition over Islamist parties. The coalition is led by Mahmud Jibril, a former regime official who defected and became the international face of the 2011 revolution.

Commenting on Libya's landmark vote that gave an edge to a liberal coalition over Islamist parties Ms Massoud, is reported saying that Libyan society is afraid of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists, and that Libyan women fear being forced to wear the niqab, which covers the face, as is required of women in Saudi Arabia.

Those elected in the July 7 polling will appoint a new government and deliver a new constitution on the basis of a process still under debate.

Libyan women's next challenge according to womensnews now is securing a foothold in the committee of 60 that will draft a constitution.

Women benefitted in the polls from a so-called zipper system that required parties to alternate between male and female candidates not only within their lists but also across the top of their lists, it said.

Female candidates were just shy of half--545 of 1,206 candidates - of those vying for seats reserved for parties. Only 85 women out of 2,501 contenders took the risk to run as individual candidates.

Keeping in mind that women gained less than two percent of seats in neighbouring Egypt's parliament, international observers are praising the performance of Libyan women, with Sabra Bano, director of Gender Concerns International, based in The Hague, the Netherlands saying: "Seventeen percent is not a bad start to me.

Election observers ranging from the European Union and the United Nations to the US-based Carter Centre all celebrated the high turnout of female voters on election day in their preliminary reports.

Referring to Gaddafi and his green book, Ms Massoud said: "We are starting very fast. Libyan women could not practice politics before because there was room for only one."

She said a stigma was attached to the women visible in public life under Gaddafi, because he used them for sex rather than as a sounding board for ideas. "Women's organisations back then were small in numbers and under his control,? she said.

Women made up 45 percent - 1.3 million - of the registered voters in this election and turned out in high numbers to vote. All parties were obliged to include women in their lists.

The majority of the elected female representatives reportedly come from the ranks of either Jibril's National Forces Alliance, NFA, or those of the Justice and Construction Party, which was launched by Libya's Muslim Brotherhood.

Compounded Grief Issues

I've been told that in addition to depression, anxiety and mild PTSD I have compounded grief issues over the loss of friends and family.
I've always been very sensitive. Now I'm just lost in a swirling vortex of grief where I can't separate one loss from another. A man I loved dearly was killed last April and I had been under extreme stress before his death. Since his death I seem to dwell on his death and the deaths of other close, dearly beloved, friends and family.
My special mentor, Oz (short for his last name) who passed away of Parkinson's and who I never got to say goodbye to.
My two friends who were sharing a house when one's ex husband came in and shot both women to death, then failed to kill himself. I wasn't here for their funerals. We didn't have many friends in common so I don't have anyone to remember them with me, to share that I still miss them. At that point in my life they were my strength, my only strength, helping me get out of an abusive relationship, always there no matter what and then so brutally ripped away.
My matron of honor's best friend, who was still in college. I knew we were going to be friends when she moved back home. We had a kind of connection, then she was home for the summer and was hit by a drunk driver while riding her bike home and died two days later.
A friend and I left her Memorial Service to rush to my friend Diana's side at the hospital. She was dying of stage 4 cervical cancer at the age of 27. She died that afternoon. I was holding her hand when she took her last breath.
I can go on, and on, and on... I have nightmares, cry constantly, I RAGE and pace and swear. I try to write, to draw, to immerse myself in my kids, my husband. I want to go out and walk until I fall over just so that I'll sleep. But that won't work either because if I overdo physical stuff my medical issues flare up badly and I have to take care of my kids.
My husband told me I need a solid week of catharsis. I told him I doubt I'd survive a whole week of catharsis. I was insensitive to someone today because their "grief" was about someone who wasn't dead. I don't know what I am anymore.
I feel like the mountain is just too high and there are no paths, so how can I even begin to climb? People tell me to take care of myself. All I can manage is to sit and cry alone instead of in front of my kids. People tell me to get out, make new friends. I find myself thinking, "Why, so I can lose them too?" Why would anyone want to be friends with me right now, I'm an absolute MESS. Like I said, swirling, dizzy, exhausted, lost and confused. I guess I need to ..
