Masked Conn. teen killed by dad called a good kid

NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) ? Tyler Giuliano had no trouble with the law. The teenager loved flying small planes as a Civil Air Patrol cadet and seemed happy as he played an online game with friends Wednesday night. But hours later, authorities say, Tyler was outside wearing a black ski mask and wielding a knife when he was shot by his father, who thought he was a prowler.

No immediate charges were brought against Jeffrey Giuliano, a popular fifth-grade teacher, in the slaying of 15-year-old Tyler, who was gunned down in his aunt's driveway next door to his own home in New Fairfield around 1 a.m. Thursday.

"It's something out of a Hollywood script," said John Hodge, the first selectman, or top elected official, in the town of nearly 14,000 people about 50 miles from New York City. He said he couldn't recall another killing in his eight years on the job.

State police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said the boy had never been in trouble with the law, and some of those who knew him described him as a good kid with an easygoing personality. Investigators and acquaintances said they were at a loss to explain what he was doing outside dressed all in black and carrying a weapon.

"Certainly, that is the major question we are trying to answer at this point," Vance said.

State police said the shooting happened after Jeffrey Giuliano got a call from his sister next door saying that someone might be trying to break into her home in their neighborhood of attractive colonial-style houses. Giuliano grabbed a handgun and went outside to investigate, troopers said.

He confronted someone in a ski mask and opened fire when the person came at him with something shiny in his hand, police said.

When police officers arrived, Tyler was lying dead in the driveway with a knife in his hand, and his father, in a T-shirt and shorts, was sitting on the grass. Detectives informed the elder Giuliano several hours later that he had shot his son, Vance said.

"All in all, it's a tragedy," Vance said.

Police were investigating whether the father's gun was registered.

No one answered the door at Giuliano's home or his sister's.

Tyler was a student at New Fairfield High School and a Civil Air Patrol cadet. Some of those who knew him said he enjoyed spending time with family and flying gliders and small planes. He was adopted by Giuliano and his wife a few years ago, friends said.

One classmate said many students were baffled by what happened.

"I just thought it was so weird when I heard because I knew Tyler, not very well, but he was just a sweet person and he always made everyone laugh. I met him in the chorus room, actually, and he just wasn't the type to do what happened," said Erin Pallas, 16. "So it didn't make sense to us. It doesn't make sense to the student body."

Brett Rasile, a 14-year-old friend, said he and Tyler were playing an online game called Minecraft while talking and laughing together via Skype until about 10 p.m. Wednesday, when Tyler said he had to go to bed. Brett said Tyler wasn't in any trouble that he knew of, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

"Same old Tyler. He was perfectly fine," Brett said. "He didn't really leave any evidence, any hints towards what he would do."

Alicia Roy, New Fairfield superintendent of schools, said the elder Giuliano grew up in the town, holds summer music and zoology camps for his students and plays guitar in a local rock band that raises money for charity. He is affectionately known as "Mr. G" around Meeting House Hill School.

"He was the teacher you requested in the fifth grade. He was a great teacher. All the kids loved him," said Rosemary Rasile, Brett's mother.

Brian Wyckoff, 17, said Mr. G "was always walking around with a smile on his face. He always says hi to everyone."

The high school stayed open late to provide grief counseling for students and parents.

"The community is deeply saddened, and our hearts go out to all the family members," Roy said.

New York's Ultraluxury Office Vacancy Rate Jumps To Two Year ...

Traditionally, when it comes to reading behind the manipulated media's tea leaf rhetoric and timing major inflection points in the economy, the most accurate predictor are financial firms, whose sense of true economic upside (or downside) while never infallible, is still better than most. Yet unlike employment, which is usually a lagging, or at best concurrent indicator, one aspect that has always been a tried and true leading indicator, has been real estate demand, in this case rental contracts. Due to the long-term lock up nature of commercial real estate contracts, firms are far less eager to engage in rental transactions (and bidding wars) when they expect a worsening macroeconomic environment. Which is why news that office vacancy in Manhattan's Plaza district, the area between Sixth Avenue and the East River from 47th to 65th streets, anchored by the landmark Plaza Hotel at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South which is home to some of the nation?s most expensive and prestigious office towers, and where America's largest hedge funds and PE firms have their headquarters, has just risen to 12.3%, or a two year high, is probably the most troubling news for the economy and a real indicator of what to expect of the immediate future.

From Bloomberg:

The availability rate for offices in the Plaza submarket reached 12.3 percent last month, a two-year high, as space leased to Citigroup Inc. and General Motors Co. went on the market, according to data from brokerage Colliers International. It was 10.5 percent in the third quarter of last year.

If there is any indicator of financial firm demand for property, and thus their outlook on future prosperity, it is the state of the Plaza real estate market:

About 30 percent of the market is financial-service firms, which have announced about 60,000 job cuts worldwide this year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

?

?The Plaza?s weakness is symptomatic of a larger problem,? said Michael Knott, a real estate investment trust analyst with Green Street Advisors Inc. in Newport Beach, California. ?Manhattan?s economic engine is not firing, and that, of course, is finance.?

?

Office owners in the Plaza district have historically sought higher rents than in the rest of Midtown, even if it means leaving space unleased for longer. Asking rents averaged $80.74 a square foot at the end of August, the highest in midtown Manhattan, where the average is $71.28, according to Colliers. Midtown Manhattan rents are the most expensive of all U.S. business districts.

?

The Plaza area is so pricey because securities firms, hedge funds and money-management companies want to be near one another in New York?s top buildings, said Joseph Harbert, president of Colliers? eastern region. The park, hotel and the Fifth Avenue and 57th Street shopping corridors are draws, as well as the idea that ?it is close enough to transportation but not in the midst of all the congestion of Grand Central? Terminal, Harbert said in an e-mail.

Needless to say, the primary driver of the surge of vacancy, is ongoing corporate downsizing coupled with collapsing tenant cash flows.

Those are GM?s last offices in the building, said Laura Toole, a company spokeswoman. The staff of about 200 has been relocated to smaller offices at 1345 Avenue of the Americas, she said.

?

The GM Building offices ?were sized for about 500 people,? Toole said. ?So we?re going to a smaller, right-sized space, which in the end we hope will result in a significant savings for the company.?

?

?We?re still seeing a lot of interest from smaller financial-service
firms,? he said. ?It?s not a growth industry for the large financial
firms today.?

?

Kozel said he expects the Plaza district?s availability rate to tick higher in the coming months as financial firms continue to reduce staff, citing Deutsche Bank as an example. The Frankfurt-based company said on Sept. 11 that job cuts will exceed the 1,900 it announced in July, and it will reduce regional back-office functions.

?

?The Plaza district will come back again,? said Hennessy of Cassidy Turley. ?This may be somewhat of an aberration in the marketplace. How often is the Plaza the weakest market in Midtown? We need some stability both in Europe and in the United States, and we need some certainty about what our tax environment is going to look like going in post-2013.?

The reason why landlord REITs and other entities can keep rents as high as they want even as vacancy rates soar is that the funding cost in a ZIRP environment is virtually nil.

Some of the biggest U.S. REITs own or have stakes in real estate in the district, including Boston Properties Inc. (BXP), which controls the GM Building and 601 Lexington. At the GM Building, the Detroit-based automaker?s asset-management unit is leaving 114,000 square feet, which it has put on the market as a sublease. That is one of the Plaza district?s largest new vacancies, according to Kozel of Colliers.

?

Office owners are still getting top dollar in the Plaza district. The spread this year between rents landlords achieved there and those in Midtown overall is 17.2 percent, the highest in records dating to 2002, according to CompStak Inc., a New York-based leasing data service.

?

Rents tend to take awhile to adjust to higher vacancies, Harbert said.

Of course, under ZIRP, it will take much, much longer, before a true clearing market manifests itself. As a result, there is little opportunity cost to keep space unoccupied as there is little required cash outflows. It also means that many skyscrapers in what was once NY's most desired area, are now half empty.

?Right now, Midtown just isn?t cool,? Jason Pizer, president of Trinity Real Estate, a landlord in the area, said last week at a forum sponsored by Bisnow Media, a publisher of online business newsletters. ?The people who come to our buildings, they use words like ?dude? and ?totally.? They pound you, they don?t shake your hand. And right now, those are the ones making the space decisions.?

?

In the Plaza district, about 234,000 square feet leased to Citigroup at 666 Fifth Ave. went on the market in August. That building, a 41-story skyscraper at West 53rd Street, has almost 500,000 of its 1.5 million square feet available, according to Cassidy Turley, a St. Louis-based commercial-property brokerage with offices in New York.

?

The tower housed Citigroup?s private-banking operation, which has relocated to the bank?s offices at 601 Lexington Ave., the skyscraper formerly known as Citigroup Center, which is part of the Plaza District.

?

Vornado Realty Trust (VNO), which co-owns 666 Fifth with Kushner Cos., declined to comment, said Wendi Kopsick, a spokeswoman. The New York-based REIT is overseeing the search for new tenants.

The building in question is 666 Fifth. This is ironic, because it is the same building we discussed years ago, and was captured in one of our first posts, when we began our narrative of the Second Great Depression. Nearly four years ago we said:

Looks like the commercial mortgage apocalypse is about to claim its next victim, this time in the form of the appropriately numbered 666 Fifth Avenue building, home to such previously flourishing tenants as Citi Private Wealth Management. Now that private wealth is no more, Citi has decided to take a hike and has so far vacated over 80,000 square feet of space (and since it has over 482,000 sq feet in the building, one can bet it has a ways to go). As a result, the building's DSCR (or ratio of rent generated to interest owed for us non mortgage bankers) has fallen to an abysmal 0.69. Even when taking into account the $98 million (or much less) reserve fund the building has set aside to cover rent shortfalls, one can assume it won't be long before the 666 insignia again prominently graces the roof, especially since it would have to replace a laughable Citi sign.

Sure enough, in the end we were once again proven right. And had it not been for the now ubiquitous manipulation of every market by the Federal Reserve, this prediction would have been validated long ago. Yet while under the New Normal one can dilute cash infinitely, one can never print actual cash flows, economic growth, and true wealth. It is the last three, or rather their absence, that is once again starting to become felt by everyone, and certainly the critical, and most "marginal", sector of the economy.

Self Improvement Advice That Will Help You Succeed | Free Anger ...

Do you want to reshape your life into a better one? Read the following tips as a means to help with your personal development.

You must understand that a divide exists between where you currently are, and the place you would like to go. This is the first step to actually starting the journey of where you want to be. If you cannot see this discrepancy, it is unlikely that you will reach your highest potential.

The principles you believe in need to be put into practice. All people have beliefs that tell what they are about. If you?ve got a decent foundation in order to defend them, you can boost your self-esteem. Maintaining your core foundation allows for consistency in life and builds good character.

TIP! Focus on one issue at a time. Although you may have a long list of self-improvement goals, it can be more effective, and you will be more successful, if you tackle them one at a time.

Compose a pep talk for yourself. List all your great attributes on an index card. Have it with you at all times, and look at it when you want some inspiration. For even more powerful results, record a video of yourself reading your list and watch it frequently. Are you wondering why you should do this?

Try to get the most out of your work time to get more accomplished. This can be achieved by taking frequent breaks from work. This may seem counterproductive, but by taking constant breaks, you have time to unwind and recharge so that when you get back to work, you can get more stuff done.

Look at who you are inside instead of your appearance on the outside. Top of the line clothing or model-looks does not always make you a better person. It is your personality and character traits that are going to define who you are in life. Your priority should be the enhancement of your inner beauty. Your outer beauty can be dealt with at a later time.

When developing a plan for personal improvements, include the values that are most important in your life. You should always strive to do your best in all aspects of your life.

TIP! The people in your life should have similar interests. This will help to boost your self-esteem as well as give you a bit of a break from the kind of people that spend their time badmouthing your dreams and goals every chance that they get.

Your body?s health influences the well-being of your mind. Regular exercise and a healthy, nutritionious diet are two things every person should aim for. Remember that a healthy body can lead to a healthy mind.

Building an effective self improvement routine is not, as you might now agree, all that tough. Self improvement can bring you happiness and well-being, all through simply taking initiative for your own life

Anger influences an incredible number of individuals each and every year but fortunately you can find also a lot of remedies attainable to treat it. Check out the websites below to study more information about anger management movie.

Gramophone Awards 2012 to pianist Murray Perahia, conductor ...

Gramphone magazine's prestigious recordings awards include honors for pianist Murray Perahia and conductor Claudio Abbado. Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja was named Artist of the Yearand 20-year-old pianist Benjamin Grosvenor was named Young Artist of the Year.?
Perahia wins in a new category: the "Piano Award." And in choosing Abbado's recording of "Fidelio," critic Richard Osborne writes:
"The revised dialogue provided by stage director Tatjana G?rbaca is not without controversy. In Act 1, her cuts and rewrites remove all hint of domesticity and private affection; in Act 2, she omits just about everything. The result is Beethoven?s lofty Singspiel recast as musical meta-theatre. Happily, the cast is as fine as any that might be assembled today and Abbado himself conducts a performance the like of which we have not heard since the time of Furtw?ngler. It is a no-frills yet at the same time deeply expressive reading which goes like a bolted arrow directly to the heart of the matter. If Fidelio speaks as no other opera does of the miraculous resilience of the human spirit, Claudio Abbado?s late re-creation of it serves only to compound that miracle."

Indiana Tax Reporter: Glaze Tool and Engineering Seeks ...

From the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel:

A proposed $185,000 investment would create three jobs at a New Haven tool and die shop.

Glaze Tool and Engineering, 1610 Summit St., currently employs 23 people with average salaries of about $51,750. But the new manufacturing equipment would allow the 38-year-old company to add three more workers: two machinists earning about $35,000 annually and a tool and die employee paid about $65,000, according to a tax abatement application filed with the Allen County Department of Planning Services.

Abatements temporarily reduce the taxes paid on new buildings and equipment. If County Council approves the request next month, the company's taxes would be lowered $7,000 over five years.

Glaze produces products for the automotive, food, medical, heavy equipment and other industries, and also designs and builds special machines. It had about $2.5 million in sales last year.

The new equipment is expected to be installed by November, with the new employees in place by next June.

Tim Cook on Apple maps: 'Extremely sorry'

Cook says the company is "extremely sorry" for the frustration that its maps application has caused and it's doing everything it can to make it better. (AP) ? Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company is "extremely sorry" for the frustration its Maps application has caused and it's doing everything it can to make it better. In the meantime, he recommended that people use competing map applications to get around.

Cook said in a letter posted online Friday that Apple "fell short" of its commitment to make the best products for its customers.

"Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard," Cook said.

The Cupertino, Calif., company released an update to its iPhone and iPad operating system last week that replaced Google Maps with Apple's own map application. But users complained that the new map software offers fewer details, lacks public transit directions and misplaces landmarks, among other problems. Users have been flocking to social media to complain and make fun of the app's glitches, which included judging landscape features by their names. The hulking Madison Square Garden arena in New York, for instance, shows up as green park space because of the word "Garden."

It's an unusual misstep for Apple, the world's most valuable company. Apple prides itself on releasing best-of-class products, but there have been mishaps ?even under founder and late CEO Steve Jobs, whose dogged perfectionism is legendary. A company apology, analysts believe, would likely have happened under Jobs, too.

"I think they are clearing the air and, more importantly, clarifying why they had to do their own maps," says Tim Bajarin, a Creative Strategies analyst who's followed Apple for more than three decades. He pointed to the infamous "antennagate" issue of 2010. A problem with the iPhone 4's antenna was causing reception issues when people covered a certain spot with a bare hand. Then-CEO Jobs apologized at the time, though denied there was an antenna problem that needed fixing. Apple quickly recovered.

In his letter, Cook said Apple built a new version of its Maps product to give users what they've been asking for. The new app includes turn-by-turn directions, voice integration and a 3-D Flyover feature.

Google's map application for the iPhone did not give turn-by-turn directions or voice-guided navigation, although its version for Android devices does. Google didn't license its turn-by-turn technology to Apple.

Google, says Bajarin, simply "wouldn't give it" because the turn-by-turn feature gave devices running Google's Android software an obvious advantage over Apple. Maps and navigation are among the most-used features of smartphones.

Cook said Apple's Maps will get better as more people use the app and provide feedback. That's true for all digital maps. Google's wasn't perfect when it launched, but got better over the years as users pointed out mistakes and helped the company collect its vast trove of data used to perfect it.

"Ultimately, what (Apple) discovered early on is that Google had access to 100 million iOS users who helped them build the Google Maps database, Bajarin said. "At some point Apple had to put its foot down."

It came time, he added, for Apple to own their Maps customers ? and not Google.

But now, Cook is recommending that users look at other options ?including Google's map service.

"While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app," Cook wrote.

Could Apple have avoided the Maps debacle? Bajarin thinks so. After all, the company released Siri, its oft-derided virtual assistant, Siri, noting that it was still a work-in-progress and would get better over time. Customers understood.

"Had Apple and Tim Cook and team introduced the maps as a work-in-progress, they wouldn't have the backlash," he says.

Apple released the iPhone 5 last week and on Monday it said it sold more than 5 million of them in three days. Although the number is a record for any phone, it was fewer than analysts expected.

Shares of Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple Inc. slid $8.12 to $673.20 late Friday morning, amid a broader market decline.

Scaling up polymer blobs

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Scientists use simulations to test the limits of their object of study -- in this case thin films of polymers -- to extremes of scale. In a study about to be published in EPJ E, Nava Schulmann, a researcher at Strasbourg University, France, and colleagues use a well-known model capable of providing information on heat and mechanical energy exchange between these polymer chains. They found that polymer blends confined to ultrathin two-dimensional films displayed enhanced compatibility. This was made possible by simulations using a fairly standard model, which is simple enough to allow the efficient computation of dense large-chain systems.

The authors focused on making simulations of self-avoiding and highly flexible polymer chains without chain intersections. To do so, they varied the level of polymer density, as well as their chain length, while using numerical methods to arrive at a universal view of polymer behaviour.

Thanks to molecular dynamics and so-called Monte Carlo simulations, they confirmed that such polymers adopt a scaling behaviour following a power law as a function of density and chain length. This scaling behaviour applies, for example, to polymer pressure and, hence, polymer compressibility. French Nobel laureate Pierre-Giles de Gennes predicted this property in his so-called blob picture approach. Accordingly, a polymer chain is akin to a succession of blobs, like beads in a necklace.

Schulmann and colleagues focused on a regime relevant for applications, referred to as a semi-dilute regime. There, scaling occurs more universally as long as the initial blob size is well defined. Understanding the limit of a system of long chains can currently only be realised in simulations of simplified models. However, the authors hope their findings will facilitate the work of polymer experimentalists.?

(AP) ? With his camera-ready good looks, quirky catchphrases and funky fashion choices, swimmer Ryan Lochte parlayed the five medals he won at the 2012 Olympic Games into a burgeoning media career.

But the 28-year-old athlete says he's back in the pool training for future competitions and only embraced Hollywood to raise his sport's profile.

"My main goal is to make swimming bigger than what it is, or what it was back in 2008, and the only way I can do that is by going and doing cameos, being on talk shows, doing all those little things to help bring people aware that like, just bring them into swimming more," Lochte told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday. "Honestly, the only time you ever hear about swimming is during the Olympics. I say to myself and to other people: Why can't swimming be like the NBA or the NFL or something like that, because we do have those big championship meets once a year, so why can't we have that (attention)?"

Lochte has been among the most visible Olympians to emerge from the summer games in London.

He's worked as a fashion correspondent for TV's "Extra" during New York Fashion Week, filmed cameos for "30 Rock" and "90210," served as a presenter at the Alma Awards, introduced Lil Wayne on stage at last week's I Heart Radio concert in Las Vegas and was spoofed by Seth MacFarlane on the season opener of "Saturday Night Live."

He's also using his heightened profile to help raise funds for Water for People, which provides clean drinking water sources to developing nations that lack them. Lochte and fellow gold-medal swimmer Conor Dwyer co-star in a new public-service announcement for the nonprofit group.

Lochte said he was "honored" to lend his famous face to the cause because "water is practically part of my life."

Still, on-camera work isn't easy.

"I can go up on the blocks and swim in front of millions and millions of people, no problem, and perform at my best. Like, that's easy. But getting in front of a camera and doing a little acting? That is nerve-racking," he said. "I did a first cameo for '90210' and I was completely nervous... A lot of stuff comes into play when you're acting. There's like different places where you have to be, different facial expressions, hand gestures, just everything comes into play, just for like one little scene. It's crazy."

He felt a little better on "30 Rock."

"I was working with Alec Baldwin, who's a tremendous actor, and he helped me out," Lochte said. "He was just like, 'Be yourself.' And he kind of made it on set a little more easy to work with because he was just goofing off the whole time."

And what about MacFarlane's "SNL" swipe? The "Family Guy" creator hosted last week's episode and played Lochte as a dimwit who couldn't put a sentence together.

Lochte says he's heard from "Saturday Night Live" but plans to let the whole thing go.

"I'm going to let whatever Seth MacFarlane did, I'm just going to let it be and just move forward," he said. "But anytime Seth wants to race me in a pool, I'll be more than happy to."

And though Lochte is focused on preparing for his next competition in December, if Hollywood calls, he'd answer.

"Oh yeah, of course," he said. "I had a blast doing it. If it fits into my training, I'll do it."

Got fries? These are the best and worst in America

For years, experts have been trying to figure out the so-called French paradox. Why, if the French eat such rich food, do they tend to stay lean, while the waistlines of us diet-conscious Americans are growing faster than Justin Beiber's savings account?

Eric Schmidt Apple Maps - Business Insider

Google chairman Eric Schmidt was pretty candid with reporters in Tokyo about Apple, Android and Apple's maps controversy.

Schmidt said, "We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know? What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call."

Reuters was there to jot down the quotes.

The conversation shifted to Android and Schmidt said, "Apple is the exception, and the Android system is the common model, which is why our market share is so much higher." He added that the media is "obsessed with Apple's marketing events and Apple's branding" and so it doesn't write about the fact that Android is a bigger operating system.

"That's great for Apple but the numbers are on our side," said Schmidt.

He was in Japan to promote the release of a new Android tablet. As he played with the maps in front of reporters, he said, "Take that Apple," but quickly added, "That was a joke by the way."

Uh, huh. Sure.

Being a minor and legally accepting payments online? - Web ...

I'm under 18, but I'm ready to start an online business - specifically a company that specializes in getting other young internet users their own custom websites.

I have the funds required to start such a business, but I'm worried about legally accepting payments online. My parents would be willing to sign off on anything, but not willing to use their own accounts for anything (eg. making their PayPal into a business account with their name on it) - don't ask me why, they just aren't willing to do that.

I already have a PayPal Student account, but from what I've read in their TOS and from other people online is that I can't operate a business with that account - that I run a high risk of being limited.

Does anyone have suggestions from payment processors that allow minors to take payments as a business? Thanks in advance

You might just have to wait until you're 18

You'll need to have a parent or legal guardian obtain the gateway accounts. The only way around this that I am aware of is to be emancipated, but you'd want to talk to an attorney and, honestly, I wouldn't recommend that route.

Since you are not 18 and assuming you are from USA , you can not legally sign any contract nor own any business. Thus you can not accept payment online ( and offline in various situation).
I would suggest you to hold onto your fund and wait till you are legally mature .

The way to do this is to have a legal entity.

Then you provide your business details, EIN etc. Certain areas allow states to be registered at lower age levels so just research.

Just find a place to register with no age req. =)

From what I hear you can do is to get your parents to register your business and you be the only employee of that until you're 18 when you'll then be legally allowed to "take over" the business.

Hm, perhaps I phrased my OP wrong. I don't really want to register an official business, but I want to be able to accept maybe 50 transactions a month, and then be able to use that money.

Is there a way I could do this by myself?

I would honestly recommend that you do register a business. Especially if you're selling something.

Would your parents not be happy about being the "account holder" for the PayPal account where from their it can be linked to your bank, card and what not?

Considering you would have to pay taxes etc. You should really know what you are doing. You could also be putting your parents in a liability situation.

Our 16 year old twin daughters and our 13 year old daughter own an internet radio station that's been in operation since 2004, previously owned by their older sisters that are now married.

They have a bank account with us as the co signers on the account. They also have a Paypal account that's in our names dba as the name of their radio station. They have a membership for their radio station based on membership donation.

Their mom and I control the finances of their business. For them to write a check one of us have to co sign the check. We've had no issues with them and with the profits they're making all of that is going into their college funds as a tax free investment.

The way we're handling things is teaching them they must take care of their money, run their business legally, cannot waste their money, accounting, banking and straight up business management.

If you're under the legal age to own a business then I would suggest you get some adult help and learn some smart business practices from them, or you may end up being an also ran and hiding from your clients.

Good luck on your business venture.

There is no such legal thing as an "unofficial" business. I don't know about other states, but in California, a minor cannot enter in to any legal contract without parental/guardian consent/co-sign, etc. My advice? Focus on school, go to a good college, wait to run your business. There is PLENTY of time to do that after doing the things you should do when you're young, like getting a degree. Get it done and out of the way.

@Danny247 - there are ways to do it but you will need the cooperation/assistance of a parent and/or guardian.

I tend to agree with the others though, I would wait until I was 18. Heck, when I was 10~12 I was dreaming of having my own servers colocated and starting my own hosting business... I know what it's like to want to do something and feeling that you can do it, but not legally being able to do it [at least, not easily].

I'm 26 going on 27 now, if that puts anything into perspective for you.

I often come down hard on stupid teens and their stupid "businesses".

For once, somebody is doing things the right way.

I think Bruc's is the best suggestion.

I don't know about now but I remember my mom opening my bank account in my name when I was 10 and I used that account until I was an adult.

I had all sorts of after school jobs and so forth from 14, cashing cheques, saving money, and being responsible. Do hard work, get paid, get what you want...although when I was 14 I didn't even know about BBS's yet, so times are a bit different. But I started investing into my prior business from 16 and turned it into a full time business when I was older.

Unless you (or your parents) have to something to hide, and since online businesses are a bit different and have the potential of all sorts of scams, going through your parents would be the best route. Look at it as 1 year training to get you on your own feet when you turn 18.

Join a road train, take your hands off the wheel

1 day

The road to driverless cars of the future may be a highway lined with trains of cars that autonomously follow human-driven trucks, according to Volvo.

The car company and its European partners just completed the Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE) ?project, successfully showing the potential for so-called platooned traffic.

The concept is a step towards a future where we leave all the driving to robots. Here, drivers pilot their cars onto a highway where they join with a regularly scheduled ?road train.??

Once joined up with the train, drivers are free to take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel. Read the newspaper. Play games with the kids in the backseat. Take a nap. When your exit comes up, drivers manually leave the train. The concept is demonstrated in the video below.

The lead truck is driven by a professionally trained human at speeds up to 55 miles per hour. The cars in the train simply follow the lead vehicle.?

The ability for cars to do so comes from existing camera, radar and laser technology developed for systems such as adaptive cruise control and parking assistance, Volvo said.

The only new features are an interface that humans can use to join and leave trains as well as short-range vehicle-to-vehicle communications systems so that cars in the train can talk to each other.

In addition to the joy of not having to stay focused on the road drive down mind-numbing stretches of highway, the technology will save fuel given the reduced air drag, improved traffic flow, and better utilization of available road real estate, according to the SARTRE project.

Before the trains become a reality, hurdles include obstacle avoidance and sudden braking. But such technicalities are smaller feats than those required for fully robotic cars driving down city streets.

Debunking Diets: Raw Pros and Cons | Greatist

The amount of dietary do?s and don?ts bombarding us on a daily basis may make sifting through bogus nutritional claims seem impossible. But have no fear ? the Greatist sleuths are here to decode the latest, greatest, (and not so great) diets in our Debunking Diets Series.?This week, we?re digging deeper into the raw food diet. Debunking Diets Raw

The Breakdown

What you can eat: Raw or slightly heated plant-based foods. A raw diet relies on uncooked fruits and vegetables, sprouted grains, unroasted nuts and seeds, seaweed, dried fruits, and beans. Some variations include fermented foods (which, like sprouted grains, are considered ?alive?) like miso, sprout milk yogurt, and raw soy sauce.

What you can?t eat: Anything heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit, which includes nearly all processed food, sugar, alcohol, and caffeine. That means pretty much anything outside the produce aisle of a grocery store is off limits ? except packages specifically labeled ?raw.? Good news for snackers: Nibbles like kale chips, seaweed, and dried fruit mixes are a-okay as long as they?re sun-baked or prepared in a?dehydrator.

Exceptions: Most raw foodists avoid all dairy, eggs, and even honey. But there are also?omnivorous raw diets that include raw eggs, fish, meat, and cheese made from unpasteurized (i.e. unheated) milk have gained popularity in the raw food world. Proponents believe the addition of some uncooked animal products ? basically a cross between raw and Paleo ? is actually healthier and provides more complete nutrition.

The Theory: The raw food diet ? sometimes called a living food (LF) diet or ?rawism? ? claims that cooked foods are harmful to human health. To get the most out of food and avoid toxins, raw foodists try to keep their diet as natural and ?alive? as possible. Proponents of the diet argue that humans are the only animals that cook their food. They believe this is why animals that eat cooked food (humans, household pets, and other domesticated critters) are the only species with health issues like cancer, diabetes, and genetic diseases. Studies have shown?eating the rainbow?consistently reduces the risk of cancer, but the results for raw versus cooked fruits and veggies are inconclusive[][].

According to raw foodists, heating food above 115 degrees breaks down natural enzymes in fruits and vegetables that make digestion easier. Cooking some foods can also?release carcinogens and free radicals?that may contribute to health problems[].

The first modern proponent of a raw diet for better health was Swiss doctor Maximillian Bircher-Benner?(fun fact: He also invented muesli!). In 1897 Bircher-Benner claimed to have cured his own jaundice with a regimen of raw apples. From that point on, he set about convincing others that raw food was the secret to optimal health.

Apples and Bananas ? What the Science Says

A raw diet contains extremely low levels of saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium?because of the lack of meat, dairy, and processed food. It is notably high in fiber, vitamins, and nutrients like beta-carotene and vitamin A found in fruits and veggies[]. The antioxidant-rich diet often results in significant weight loss and has also been shown to help bring relief from diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia[][]. Because fat produces molecules that trigger inflammation throughout the body, a diet extremely low in fat can reduce those reactions (simply because there?s less fat hangin? around). Raw foodists also claim the diet increases happiness, reduces anxiety, promotes a feeling of connectedness with the planet, and grants?eternal youth (just kidding about that last one)[].

So why hasn?t everyone thrown out their pots and pans and embraced this magic diet? It?s no joke. A raw food diet is requires a serious commitment ? no conventional banana bread, veggie burgers, or pizza ? and it also can have some serious health drawbacks.

According to some nutritionists, a raw food diet is no better than a healthy, balanced diet that includes cooked food. Many of the supposed benefits aren?t backed by research.?Raw foodists claim that cooking food destroys vital plant enzymes that drive biochemical reactions in the body. But the digestion process (chewing, stomach acid, the works) breaks up many of those enzymes regardless of whether the food was cooked or raw to begin with. In fact, some nutrients, like lycopene in tomatoes and antioxidants in carotenoids such as carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, and peppers are actually amplified when cooked.

A raw food diet can also be dangerously low in essential nutrients like calcium, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids. Dedicated rawists often have low bone mass due to the extreme nature of the diet, which reduces body mass and can lead to osteoperosis and increased risk of fractures (though some researchers?believe the low bone mass is simply due to low body weight, not weak bones)[][].

And those who consume raw meat, eggs, and unpasteurized milk products (especially children, the elderly, and sick people) put themselves at risk for food poisoning and foodborne illness. If opting to try a raw omnivorous diet, be careful about food safety and always scope out the source?before digging into that steak tartare.

Should I Go Raw? ? Diet Decision

Incorporating more fruits and veggies into any diet is always a good idea, but consider your everyday routine and dietary needs carefully before committing to a totally raw diet. Because of the extremity of this eating plan, rawism is more of a lifestyle choice than a temporary weight loss program. Swearing off the stove can lead to higher energy levels and easier digestion, but going totally raw has some big disadvantages too.

A raw lifestyle takes planning, nutritional knowledge, and some seriopus willpower! Plus, processed raw food is pricey ? not to mention controversial. Die-hard raw foodists claim packaged raw foods and the eats at trendy raw food restaurants are not ?100 percent raw.? Nutrition labels show that going raw doesn?t always mean going healthy; for example, raw pili nut butter has almost the same nutritional content as regular ole? PB. As always, speak with a nutritionist or doctor before making any drastic dietary decisions.?

This article has been read and approved by Greatist Experts?Lindsey Joe and?Elizabeth Jarrard.
